Helpful Hints for your move


Our Checklist will help you prepare for your move in a stress-free and well-planned manner.

One Week
Before Your Move


> Collect any possessions, which have been loaned out, are away for repair and any clothes sent out for cleaning.
> Arrange for the sale or disposal of any furniture or possessions, which are not included in the move.
> Check out your garden shed, garage, attic, under house storage etc, to sort out what you want to take with you. Arrange for disposal of the rest of the items.
> Return anything you have borrowed from family and/or friends.
> Return any Library books, DVDs, Videos etc. which you have borrowed or hired.
> Ensure any outstanding accounts have been paid.
> Cancel milk, bread, and newspaper deliveries.
> Contact suppliers of Pay TV and Internet (if applicable) to arrange cancellation and re-connection
> Contact suppliers of electricity, gas, water and telephone, to arrange for final meter readings and disconnection. Also arrange for Connection at your new address if applicable.
> Make a list of everyday items which you are bound to need before and during the move. Put these items safely aside to ensure they are not accidentally packed.
> Ensure your valuable documents, jewellery, money etc are also put safely aside so that they are not accidentally packed.
> Contact the manufacturer of your refrigerator and freezer as to whether the motor needs to be bolted down for transport. Arrange for this, if necessary, to be done the day before you move.
> Contact your local Council to arrange disposal of flammables such as cleaning fluids, paints, solvents etc. These items are too dangerous to be transported. DO NOT POUR THEM DOWN THE DRAIN.

These products are classed as “Dangerous Goods” and CANNOT be transported or stored.
> TOXINS & POISONS : Arsenic, Weed Killers, Polishes, Pesticides
> FLAMMABLE GASES : Methane, Oxygen, Acetylene, Chlorine gas, Aerosols
> CORROSIVES : Mercury, Oxides, Caustic solutions, Chemical sets
> RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL : All prohibited
> FIREARMS : Hand Guns, Fully automatic weapons, Military weapons
> EXPLOSIVES : Flares, Ammunition, Fireworks, Black powder
> FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS: Petrol, Kerosene, Paints, Varnish, Turpentine, Methylated Spirit, Pure Alcohol, Photographic developers, Oils
> MISCELLANEOUS: Scuba tanks, Gas cylinders, Matches, Cleaning Fluids, Vegetable Oils, Linseed Oil, Butane Lighters, Irritants, Life Rafts, Pressured Vessels, Butane refills


Two Days Before Your Move.

> Organise an electrician to disconnect any special light fittings etc., which are being taken with you.
> Attend your local Australia Post to organise re-direction of your mail. This can be organised for up to 12 months.
> Ensure all laundry has been done.
> Drain any fuel from your lawn-mower, whipper snipper, chain saw or other machinery, which is to be moved.
> Tightly seal all jars, bottles and cans of non-flammable liquid and place them in waterproof containers or sturdy plastic bags.
> Remove any curtains or blinds, which you are taking with you.
> Have all boxes/cartons sealed and clearly marked with their contents. E.g. “kitchen” “FRAGILE – Glassware”. Make sure they are not blocking doorways, which will hinder the removal of furniture from the room.

The Day Before Your Move.

> Take all unwanted medications to your local chemist for disposal. DO NOT PLACE THEM IN RUBBISH BINS OR FLUSH THEM DOWN THE TOILET.
> Empty your refrigerator and freezer completely. Defrost if necessary and wipe the interiors dry. Leave doors open for 24 hours to completely dry and air them. Pack shelving and crispers separately.
> Prepare your washing machine for transport by removing hoses from taps. Lay the hoses flat to drain excess water.
> Water Beds should be drained and the base dismantled, if applicable. (Most water bed stores have someone who can drain the bed completely and fold the bladder ready for transport)
> Ensure the final meter readings have been taken for Electricity, Gas and Water.
> Make a final check of all cupboards, drawers and storage areas to ensure nothing has been left in them.
> Wash and dry all crockery, cutlery glassware etc that you have been using and pack ready for transport.
> Have a good night’s rest in preparation for your move tomorrow.

The Day of Your Move.

> Be on hand when the removalist crew arrives. If you cannot personally do this, arrange for someone to be there on your behalf.
> Keep small children out of the removalist’s way.
> Inform the removalist crew of any items you will need first at the delivery address. These items will then be packed last, so as to be first off.
> Remain at the premises until everything has been packed and loaded for transport.
> Check the house and garden / lawn to ensure nothing has been left behind.
> Check and sign the inventory list, if applicable.
> Ensure all taps in the house have been turned off.
> Check that all gas and electricity switches are turned off.
> Lock all windows and doors.
> Leave for your new adventure!

> Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) within 7 days
> Australian Taxation Office within 7 days
> Govt. Departments (for Medicare, Family Allowance, Pensions, Superannuation etc) ASAP
> Insurance Companies – (Life, vehicle, motorcycle, home, contents etc) ASAP
> Employers.
> Schools.
> Solicitor.
> Banks and other financial institutions. ASAP
> Rental and /or Hire Purchase Companies.
> Auto Clubs such as NRMA, RACQ etc. ASAP
> Health Professionals, Doctor, Dentist, Private Health Funds etc.
> Electoral Role within 4 weeks
> Publication Subscriptions
> Club Memberships
